"El que le gane al Almendares se muere"

Club Almendares was founded by the enthusiasm of Teodoro Zaldo, Carlos Zaldo, Antonio Alzola, Leonardo Ovies, Alfredo Lacazette, Alejandro Reed, Standhope, Adolfo Nuno, Zacarias Barrios, Fernando Zayas and Joaquin Franke. The Club participated in the first Championship against Habana and Matanza finishing in second place. A very interesting event happened in the Championship of 1879-80 when Almendares protested against Club Colon for having two American ballplayers on the team. Club Colon had in their lineup the first American ballplayers to play in Cuban Championships. Because of the protest Club Colon withdrew from the Championship. In 71 Championships in which Club Almendares participated, they finished first 25 times, second 24 times, third 14 times and fourth 8 times.
